The M12 Meeting: A year of FleX-RAY research

A full year of FleX-RAY research, testing and hard work required a conclusive consortium gathering. The 12th-month meeting took place on the 28th of September with the participation of all the partners. A run-through of the finished work and achieved progress for the last trimester, as well as future work and respective tasks, were extensively discussed. The whole team got the chance to celebrate milestones and achievements while identifying issues, risks and impediments.

After the customary introduction to the meeting’s agenda, the University of Sheffield presented the finished work on detector modelling and RISE (Research Institute of Sweden) moved on to the progress on scintillating fibre manufacturing. Then, the torch was passed to Optoelectronica, and the focus shifted towards fibre coupling development that will be running for the duration of the project. Afterwards, the University of Sheffield continued with preliminary image reconstruction algorithm development results while the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute drew attention to shape sensing development. Following that, TWI Hellas shared information on the hardware development process and later initiated a discussion on the future work plans where all partners contributed with insights and views. Last but not least, during the final two presentations, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and TWI Hellas concentrated on the dissemination/exploitation efforts and project management, respectively.

The month-12 meeting marked the end of the first year of our 3-year long journey. Thus, our learnings so far will drive our work towards developing a flexible imaging detector that uses single-photon avalanche photodiodes and inorganic scintillating fibres for another two years.
